There is an article in the new Psychology Today (October 2009 - I don't think it's on the newstand yet, I have a subscription and just got it in the mail today) about sex ratio. The author of the article extended the Trivers-Willard hypothesis to include many more traits. Basically, the hypothesis is that if parents have ANY trait that would be exceptionally good to pass on to a girl, they'll have more girls (and vice versa for boys.). For example, larger body size is a trait that would be (at a basic biological/evolutionary level) "good" to pass on to a son....thus a larger couple will have more sons than daughter. On the other hand, physical attractiveness is a trait that would be "good" to pass on to a daughter...thus a more attractive couple would have more daughters. It's a long article, but she summarizes the good boy and girl traits:

FACTORS FAVORING SONS: Higher social status, greater wealth, strong "male" brain (ie mathematical/analytical), larger body size (by height and weight), tendency toward violence, and tendency toward sexual promiscuity.

FACTORS FAVORING DAUGHTERS: lower social status, lesser wealth, strong "female" brain (empathy), smaller body size (by height and weight), and physical attractiveness.

An analysis of two nationally representative samples, each containing tens of thousands of participants, supports their predictions.

Interesting!

I am glad you posted this. Thanks for taking the time to do so. It does make sense to me. If it's true then my DH and I would have more sons.

Like all these studies, it's not 100% of course. Obviously, many (most) people have a mix of genders. I think the author is just suggesting that if you & hubby have some "male factors" and have 10 kids, 6 will be boys and 4 will be girls. Know what I mean?

Holds no bearing what so ever towards my family...I'd say we have def. have more of the factors favoring girls...not saying we're an attractive couple by any means hehe...but def. lower social status, lesser wealth, for sure empahty and my body size is small weight wise and average height...really none of the son factors...and we have 5 boys...

Since I just got the magazine in the mail, the article is not online yet. It's in the October 2009 issue of Psychology Today. It's titled "A Chip Off The Best Block" and the author is Satoshi Kanazawa, Phd.

EDITED TO ADD: I googled the author's name, he's written a book called "Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters"

Here is an article from NY Times about his work that kind of summarizes his findings (my big question is this: HOW DID HE MEASURE "ATTRACTIVENESS"? Is it just *his* opinion??)

Why Do Beautiful Women Sometimes Marry Unattractive Men?

It may be that the unattractive man has a lot of money, or some other compelling attribute.

But a new study by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist at the London School of Economics, suggests it may be a simple supply-and-demand issue: there are more beautiful women in the world than there are handsome men.

Why? Kanazawa argues it’s because good-looking parents are 36% more likely to have a baby daughter as their first child than a baby son — which suggests, evolutionarily speaking, that beauty is a trait more valuable for women than for men. The study was conducted with data from 3,000 Americans, derived from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, and was published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology.

According to this news article, “Selection pressure means when parents have traits they can pass on that are better for boys than for girls, they are more likely to have boys. Such traits include large size, strength and aggression, which might help a man compete for mates. On the other hand, parents with heritable traits that are more advantageous to girls are more likely to have daughters.”

Beauty is apparently just one “female” trait. Kanazawa has done previous research suggesting that nurses, social workers and kindergarten teachers — those with “empathic” traits — also had more daughters than sons. Meanwhile, he found that scientists, mathematicians and engineers are more likely to have sons than daughters.

It is good that Kanazawa is only a researcher and not, say, the president of Harvard. If he were, that last finding about scientists may have gotten him fired.

For those who are interested, Kanazawa has a blog at Psychology Today where he talks about these sorts of things -

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-scientific-fundamentalist

There is a lot of thought-provoking reading in his blog.  If I was having a dinner party and could invite anyone, he would def. be at the top of my list.

I urge everyone who is at all interested in the science behind swaying to read Kanazawa's studies with an open mind before making any snap judgements about them.  In addition to the 'beautiful women have more daughters' he also has a study titled 'engineers have more sons' or something similar, if you Google them they pop up right away.

That is so interesting.  My DH and I have SEVERAL of the factors that favor sons and very few of the factors for girls.

Here is a link to the first part of a four part series from Kanazawa's blog that discusses in depth the ideas in the Psychology Today article:

I think we have an equal amount of both factors...but we have all girls. Confused Huh? Maybe if we gain some weight and start being more violent and sexualy promiscuous we'll have a boy! LOL Great article though!! Thanks for sharing!!
