I just got Henry's letter with info on kindergarten, and school starts at 8:55 and lets out at 3:30. That's 6.5 hours long!  That seems like a really long day for a 5 year-old to me.  I was just wondering if that is normal for kindergarten these days, or is our school district just insane?

Our school district goes from 7:45 - anywhere from 2:45 - 3:05, depending on the school.  However, Caleb is going to private Kinder (where he's been in preschool so far), and it is from 8:15 - 12:15, with the option of "stay and play" until 1:30.  That was a big deciding factor in our staying there.

I guess it isn't that unusual then.  I so wish I had an option for him to go half-day. I would feel enormously better about that.  But we don't even have any private schools around here with half-day kindergarten.  The only option would be to send him back to preschool for another year, but I don't really think that's fair to him.  But going from 3 x a week for 3.5 hours  to 5 x week for 6.5 hours is just such a huge jump.

I work for a private international school, we do options of 3,4,5days a week,.

Half day or full days

Half days are 8:30- 12:30 But School/lessons start at 9am.

Full days are 8:30- 2:45pm

This is a pre school with children age 2.5-3 years

I think having 2 year olds there learning for 6 hours is too long, some of them are not out of nappies. Sad

Some cry for the first few weeks, Wanting there mummies. Its hard for them.

My school district only does half day Kindergarten, so either 9-12 or 12:15-3:20 Monday-Thursday with shorter days on Fridays.  But the last few years my kids' school got a special grant that allowed them to do full day Kindergarten from 9-3:20, but parents had the option of doing only half day if they wanted.  So last year DD1 was in full day Kindergarten.  Then at the end of last year they lost the grant, so they are back to doing half days.  And honestly I'm pissed about that.  That means next year when DD2 starts Kindergarten and DD1 is in 2nd grade that I'll have to take 3 trips to the school every day or trust them to walk and just take one trip when DD2 would be going to school alone.  Anyways, back to the issue, 6.5 hours really wasn't that long.  They had the schedule set up really well where they had a lot of time to rest and play, they had both a morning snack and lunch, they had reading groups, and also extra curriculars like PE, art, music, library, and parties/assemblies.  With half day they lose a lot of the fun stuff about school until 1st grade.

In the public school district here it's from like 8:30 to 11:15. My kids go to catholic school though and it's from 8:35 to 3:10. I don't think that it's too long at all. The public school kids here get jipped....3 hours is way too short. Once they get there it's time to leave.
