Female Orgasm During Intercourse

• Female orgasm alters the vagina's pH, making it more alkaline and thus more hospitable to sperm. Dr. Shettles theorized that a more alkalinic vaginal environment makes it more likely to conceive a boy.

Intercourse Position

• Dr. Shettles theorized that the "rear entry" position (with the woman kneeling and the man entering from behind) would favor conception of a boy. Because this position provides deep penetration, depositing sperm nearer the cervix, he believed that quicker male sperm would win the short sprint to the egg.

  Dr. Shettles advised the "missionary" position (with the man and woman face to face, man on top) for conceiving a girl. Because this position provides shallow penetration, he believed that the hardier female sperm would triumph in the longer, more arduous journey to the egg.

Days Father Abstained from Ejaculation Prior to Intercourse

• Dr. Shettles claimed that refraining from ejaculation (completely, not just during intercourse) increased sperm count and the likelihood of conceiving a boy. The O+12 method, however, contends that abstaining from ejaculation increases the percentage of female sperm, and favors conceiving a girl.
